Before there was The Signal & The Spiral, there was a young woman at the edge of the Pacific, wandering the coastline searching for shells.
It’s my first business trip to California as a book editor, and I’m eager to meet my new West Coast authors. Honeysuckle fills the pre-dawn air as I leave a tiny inn in Rancho Santa Fe and turn onto the highway toward the coast, heading to San Diego. As the sun climbs higher in the sky, the moon fades, retaining her magnetic connection to the ocean’s tide. From a hilltop stoplight, I see waves, and something older than logic whispers: go to the ocean.
I do.
I remove my high heels and peel off my hosiery, stepping barefoot into the wet sand. The salty air scrubs my skin, preparing me for the way ahead. Shells glimmer along the shoreline. I follow their sparkle like a trail of jewels, unaware that the tide is rising, that the cliff behind me has vanished into jagged distance.
And then the wave comes.
I had no handhold. No way back. The ocean’s high tide rose above my head, baptizing me in salt and surrender. When it recedes, I turn to trace my steps. But the sand is now smooth, my steps gone. I walk forward instead, forging a new pattern that vanishes behind me as quickly as I make it.
In my palm, I carry the shells that once protected tiny crustaceans. In my body, the rhythm of a new memory.
This is the moment the spiral found me.
And this is the seed planted in my psyche, growing in darkness, waiting patiently for the signal to connect three decades later.
To listen to beauty over fear.
To trust timing that doesn’t rush.
To walk the edge between structure and soul.
To make offerings from what the tide returns.
This is the rhythm that underscores The Signal & The Spiral. I created it for you and me. It’s not born from boardroom strategy, but from an archetypal symbol of resilience and hope for a new Era.
